Alleged CEO Killer’s Lawyer Denies Client’s Involvement as Evidence Pours In...

The killing of the UnitedHealthCare CEO last week shocked the country. The police have a suspect and a pile of incriminating evidence — but his lawyer denies any wrongdoing.

What Happened?

New reports coming out in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO, suggest that the three shell casings found at the scene match with the 3D-printed gun owned by prime suspect Luigi Mangione.

In addition to the shell casings, Mangione's fingerprints are said to match the prints found on a water bottle and Kind Bar wrapper at the scene of the shooting. The three 9mm shell casings included the words, 'delay’, 'deny', and 'depose' written on them. With one word written on each.

The killing of Brian Thompson has brought to light the anger many Americans harbor towards the healthcare industry. Mangione has garnered substantial sympathy online and allegedly even offers to foot his legal bills.

Since his arrest on Monday this week, the 26-year-old's background has started to come to life.

The Detail

Mangione came from a wealthy family. He was valedictorian at his high school, and was an Ivy League graduate. He allegedly disappeared from his family and friends earlier this year, only reemerging in the high-profile killing, which was potentially spurned on by his personal struggle with a back injury.

Mangione had been living and working remotely in San Francisco for the auto-buying website TrueCar, although his mother reported him missing on November 8th to the San Francisco police, saying she had not spoken to him since July 1st.

Mangione's lawyer has denied that his client had any involvement in the killing, and anticipates a not guilty plea for his client. Mangione and his lawyer have also expressed intent to plead not guilty to the Pennsylvania charges related to the 3D-printed gun and fake ID police found at the scene of the arrest.

In many of Mangione's writings which have since come to light, he referenced extreme pain from a back injury he sustained in July 2023. As a result, investigators are currently searching for an insurance claim, which may help explain any motive.

Mangione has been denied bail and remains in Pennsylvania for the time being. As he entered the courthouse Tuesday shackled at the hands and feet, he shouted out, 'It’s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people. It’s lived experience.'

Where This Goes Next

Anger at the health insurance industry and 'corporate greed' seems to be the driving force behind the killing. This is apparent as he allegedly targeted the healthcare company's highest-ranking representative.

Investigators are pulling information heavily from Mangione's social media and 'manifesto', as well as a three-page handwritten claim of responsibility found on his person when arrested earlier this week.

Mangione also referenced Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber, who himself justified his own deadly bombing campaign. Mangione has apparently also written extensively about the Unabomber online as well.

While no hearing date has been set yet, the case is already dominating headlines and has been the highest-profile case in quite some time. Don't expect to see this one fade away any time soon, especially as new incriminating evidence continues to be uncovered in the days following the killing.
