Ceasefire Proposal 'in Moscow's Hands' Following Ukraine's Agreement

A ceasefire proposal is reportedly 'in Moscow's hands' as the world awaits Putin's approval following Ukraine's agreement with U.S. officials.

What Happened?

The prospect of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is reportedly 'in Moscow's hands.'

A top Ukrainian aide told ABC News following Ukraine's negotiated agreement with U.S. officials.

The Trump administration aims for a critical breakthrough amid the three-year conflict between the parties.

Any proposal would have to take account of Russia's advances and address its concerns, senior Moscow sources told Reuters.

The Kremlin said it was wary of 'jumping the gun' following talks between the U.S. and Ukraine.

'We are carefully studying the statements,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Peskov's comments come after a summit Tuesday between U.S. and Ukrainian officials who gathered in the Saudi city of Jeddah.

Both sides agreed in principle to a 30-day ceasefire after 7-hour negotiations.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters during a layover in Ireland that the agreement will be brought to Moscow officials directly.

'If their response is “yes,” then we know we've made real progress, and there's a real chance of peace. If their response is “no”, it will be highly unfortunate,' said Rubio. 'It'll make their intentions clear.'

Why it Matters

President Donald Trump recently announced he was 'strongly considering' imposing sweeping sanctions on Russia until a ceasefire and peace agreement is reached with Ukraine.

Trump expressed those concerns on Truth Social as Russia continued 'pounding' and enforcing military efforts upon Kyiv.

The U.S. resumed sending military aid and intelligence to Ukraine after they agreed to the Trump administration's ceasefire proposal.

Russia is alone in the spotlight as the Trump administration looks for them to agree to the same truce proposal.

Pressure amounts following several Russian attacks that questioned the intentions of President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

This includes dozens of missiles and drones that impacted Ukrainian energy facilities and affected the country’s ability to deliver heat and light to its citizens.

Trump has faced criticism amid engagement efforts with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a recent heated encounter at the White House.

But now the ball is in Russia's court to avoid disruption to its massive oil production.

Potential sanctions by the U.S. could limit Russia's oil and gas revenues, including a cap of $60 per barrel on its oil exports.

How it Affects You

Thousands of sanctions were imposed by the U.S. and its partners after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The Trump administration wants to reverse previous policy and build foreign relations with Russia as an ally.

Putin and Trump could make those first steps toward that goal by resolving this critical conflict.

Other world leaders remain on watch as the results may influence the continuation of peace efforts in Gaza.
