Trump Announces Series of Day 1 Executive Actions During Inauguration Speech
Donald Trump announced a series of executive actions on Monday as he marked his return to office as the 47th president of the United States.
What Happened?
Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, marking what many have called a historic political comeback.
Following a pair of assassination attempts, impeachments, and criminal indictments, President Trump now enters his second term with plans to act swiftly on a number of measures.
Trump expressed a series of executive orders he plans to sign surrounding immigration concerns along the U.S. border, increase fossil fuel development, and measures that distinguish two biological sexes and other DEI policies.
'The golden age of America begins right now,' Trump said during his inauguration address on Capitol Hill. 'From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world.'
World leaders like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude in a statement that read, 'Today is a day of change and also a day of hope for the resolution of many problems, including global challenges.'
Trump addressed the 'inflation crisis' he's expected to outline by imposing hefty tariffs on foreign goods through his America First trade policy.
Why it Matters
Trump's successor former President Joe Biden and his administration have been blamed by some for government overspending that has capped off the initiative DOGE.
The Department of Government Efficiency co-led by billionaire Elon Musk will operate as a watchdog agency outside the government to ensure useful spending to address the nation's debt deficit.
The continued watch of ceasefire measures will be part of Trump's administration to handle the second phase of implementation between Israel and Hamas.
Trump plans to operate as a 'peacemaker' amid many current world conflicts such as the ending war in Gaza and Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly congratulated Trump ahead of his inauguration to restore dialogue with Russia as he previously signaled a willingness to talk behind a peace deal with Ukraine.
Putin blamed the outgoing Biden administration for harming the U.S. relationship with Moscow, according to reports.
These efforts however are despite Trump's reclaimed U.S. ownership focus of the Panama Canal, Greenland, and renaming the Gulf of Mexico that has reportedly raised concerns.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reportedly said Monday that NATO will 'turbo-charge' defense spending and production with Trump back in office as an optimistic view of the future.
Some congressional Democrats have spoken out about President Trump’s first moves in office, including his pledge to end birthright citizenship.
'Ending birthright citizenship is anti-American and unconstitutional. Plain and simple,' Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego said in a social media post. 'We need to address our broken immigration system and secure the border. But executive actions like this run contrary to the ideals of what makes our country great.'
How it Affects You
Trump has pledged to move faster in his agenda plans compared to his first elected term.
Many of these moves may certainly cause friction on Capitol Hill between Democrats and some Republicans.
The American people are anxiously awaiting confidence to be restored among a divided Congress to unite the country and rebuild its economy under new leadership.
