Ukrainians on High Alert After Drone Strike Targets Nuclear After Trump-Putin Call
Ukrainian officials are on high alert after an armed drone reportedly hit a nuclear plant in Kyviv just days after President Trump spoke with Russia's Putin about ending the war.

What Happened?
Ukrainian officials are on high alert after a drone armed with a warhead reportedly hit the protective outer shell of a nuclear plant.
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Kyiv was struck causing a brief fire early Friday, according to reports.
Blame has quickly pointed towards the Kremlin despite Russian officials denying it was responsible.
The strike didn’t breach the plant’s inner containment shell and radiation levels have not increased, according to the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency.
The protective shell, built in 2016 overtop another heavy concrete containment structure, was reportedly placed on the plant’s fourth reactor to prevent radiation leaks.
U.N.-backed international atomic energy watchdog IAEA issued a statement expressing deep concern that 'underlines the persistent risks to nuclear safety during the military conflict.'
'There is no room for complacency, and the IAEA remains on high alert,' said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. 'I once again call for maximum military restraint around Ukraine’s nuclear sites.'
Why it Matters
The strike comes just days after President Donald Trump said he recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the beginning stages of negotiating an immediate end to the war in Ukraine.
Trump took the Truth Social in a lengthy post regarding the 'highly productive phone call' with Putin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that his country wants 'security guarantees' from the U.S. before any peace talks with Russia begin.
He reportedly claimed that the attack, being blamed on Russia, showed Putin was 'definitely not preparing for negotiations.'
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently stated that the war between Ukraine and Russia 'must end' and 'returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective.'
He added that any security guarantees to Ukraine must be 'backed by capable European and non-European troops.'
This comes after Ukraine's NATO membership request was rejected.
Hegseth said he did not believe the move would have produced a realistic outcome for a negotiated settlement.
It further positions the U.S. stance surrounding its position of the conflict to restore global balance.
How it Affects You
President Trump still believes his administration's efforts will quickly bring an end to the three-year war between Ukraine and Russia.
The Trump administration has two important wars to help end part of campaign promises made.
Trump's unofficial title as world peace negotiator has gained support along with a set of criticisms.
A resolution between Ukraine and Russia will certainly set a tone for future actions that involve the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
